A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Quiz Night in London last week to raise funds for the School's 2013 opening.
The Tanzanian government has raised minimum standards for teachers' salaries, which we support, but which has hugely increased the financial pressures on the School. The School was originally due to open on 7th January, but had delayed its opening until 28th January in the hope that additional funds could be sourced.
Thanks to the generosity of those who attended the Quiz Night, contributed to the raffle and bought raffle tickets, we raised a huge £547 to get the School off to a more comfortable start to 2013.
It was a close competition, but here's the winning team, 'Let's vote for Pedro' with their trophies:
There's still much to do to ensure the School can remain open and able to provide education, nutrition, advocacy and friendship to Arushan children with disabilities and special educational needs.
We'll be bringing you news of fundraising events and endeavours throughout the year and hope to host another London Quiz Night in a couple of months' time. Please keep an eye on this news feed for details.
Until then, asante sana!

The Tanzanian government have raised minimum standards for teachers' salaries. Dymphna Special School supports the change, but it means we enter the new year with a new financial pressure.
We'll be fundraising throughout 2013 to make sure we can meet the new standards, starting with a Quiz Night in London. Please spread the word! If you're unable to make the Quiz Night, but would like to support the School, then you can donate directly. Please contact Mary or Chloe for the School's bank account details.
We'll bring you more news of events, ideas and top tips for fundraising throughout 2013. If you're fundraising for Dymphna, then please tell us about it!

Asante sana to everyone who attended the quiz night in London to raise money to equip the Dymphna Special School dining room. We now have photographs to share with you! The children love the new benches and a local fundi (craftsman) and his family have benefited from the commission to make them.
We hope to hold another Quiz Night in the very near future. Keep an eye on the News page for details!

The water tank is in place! This - coupled with the new bathrooms - means Dymphna Special School now has full sanitation.
This is an enormous achievement for Mary, the School and its supporters. We want to say a huge asante sana to everyone who was involved in the project.
The water system is dependent upon an electric pump, which means a new cost pressure for the School. Plus additional water will still need to be bought in during Tanzania's driest months.
We urgently need people to sponsor the sanitation system! Every donation makes a difference - please contact Mary if you can help. |

We are thrilled to report that the new bathrooms are almost finished! This has been an enormous undertaking for the School. A septic tank was built and lined, but the biggest challenge was to bring water to the School.
An enormous asante sana to all who contributed to this project - we hope you enjoy these new photos! |

Excellent progress is being made to bring full sanitation to Dymphna! You can read about the progress here.
We'll have photos soon, but in the meantime here are a few new ones from the School for all the volunteers who are missing the children (and we know you all do!)

Following the success of 2011's Charity Quiz Night, there will be a second London-based Quiz Night this May. We hope it will be bigger, we can promise it will be better and it may even be a little easier!
Dymphna Special School Charity Quiz Night
at
The Alma, opposite Wandsworth Town station
on
Thursday 3rd May
As before, the upstairs function room is booked from 18:30 to 22:30 (though there's plenty of space in the main bar for an earlier drink) and the quiz will start at 19:30. This time we will be interspersing music and picture questions throughout the rounds, and once again we aim to finish the quiz by 22:00.
Entry this time is £5 per person (payable on the day), with all profits going directly to the School. All of the money raised will be going towards the project to buy the School a bus.
We shall once again be holding a raffle, though this time we're keeping things nice and simple. We shall be raffling three to five boxes of goodies; making for a quick draw, but bigger prizes. Once again raffle tickets will be £1 each or 6 for £5, with those unable to attend the Quiz most welcome to purchase tickets.
If you would like to take part then please email us at chloe@dymphnaspecialschool.com. Please let us know if you have a team or would like to be matched-up with other individuals. Teams of four to six are ideal. Larger teams are welcome, though if you have more than six people we shall be deducting two points from your total score for each additional person. Hopefully that will give everyone a fair chance of winning the top prize and most-importantly, the trophies. Once again, the teams at the bottom of the scoreboard will be vying for kitchenware.
Please do ask if you have any questions or would like to know more about volunteering at the School. And please let your London-based, quiz-loving friends know about this event. All money raised will make a real difference to the students of Dymphna Special School.
Hope to see you there!
PS. Don't forget that 3rd May is also the day of the London Mayoral Election. Details about polling station opening times and registering for a postal vote are available at http://www.londonelects.org.uk. |

A big asante sana (thank you very much) to the generous Londoners who attended The Dymphna Special School Charity Quiz Night on 7th December.
Seven teams competed for the Winners' trophy, with Fruit & Flowers taking home the coveted prize (three of the four team members celebrate, below right).
Spoons make excellent Christmas presents took home the wooden spoons for last place. Their team name suggested that they were keen to take home the kitchenware and indeed, the spoons were proudly on display for their journeys home.
Most importantly of all - through a combination of Quiz Night entry fees, raffle ticket sales and generous additional donations - the night raised £506.30 for Dymphna Special School. Half of this money will be held by Ujamaa Hostel, who are kindly co-ordinating the purchase of a School Bus. We need $10,000 to make this purchase, with almost $2,500 raised by volunteers so far.
The other half of the money will go directly to the School. Mary is going to arrange for tables and benches to be put into the School dining room and we'll bring you photographs once they're in place. This project has the added benefit of providing work for a local fundi (craftsperson). Any money left over will be spent on food for the children.
Chloe would like to thank everyone who supported the event, including Charlotte and Oliwier who both volunteered at the School this summer and who traveled some distance in order to take part. She hopes to hold another Quiz Night in Summer 2012, details of which will be posted on this site.
If you have an event or other fundraising initiative planned for Dymphna Special School then you are welcome to post the details on this website; please contact Chloe, the website co-ordinator, to find out how. You can also contact Chloe if you would like to re-use the questions, answer sheets and other materials that she devised for this Quiz Night. |
